Blue Fly Cafe BFX Fishing Flies

From an interview with Michael Moseley Founder and President of Blue Fly Cafe on 01/03/08

What made you decide to change your flies to a whole new series of flies:
Back in 1996 we started with a vision of creating a line of fishing flies that would be sold direct on the internet. After opening our own tying facility in 1998 we produced a fishing fly that was well accepted by fly rod anglers. Since then we have had a chance to take a look at many new tying styles and technologies that are cutting edge. We knew we could produce a better fly that would be more durable and dependable than anything currently on the market. The proportions of the fly had to be more bug-like to fool even the most wary fish. In January of 2007 we started the BFX (Blue Fly Xtreme) Project, which is now the BFX Series of Fishing Flies.

How would you describe what is so different about the BFX Series of flies:
Let’s start with our tying facility. You can purchase two flies tied in the same country and one will be great and the other is poor at best. This comes down to how well managed the facility is and how the working conditions are. In 2007 we remodeled our facility and completely retrained every tier to our new tying techniques. These new techniques were developed by a group of five professional innovative tiers that are now part of the Blue Fly Cafe design team. After extensive testing of fly tying materials, we chose the best to construct our fishing flies.

Can you tell me what new materials you are using:
Absolutely, our hooks are 100% genuine Daiichi which are the finest hooks available. We tested every hook we could get our hands on and it was surprising what we found, most companies produced a good hook. But the hooks were inconsistent, more than an 80% failure rate on many. Our feathers are by Whiting Farms which are the finest feathers we could find. Even our epoxies, head cement, thread, dubbing, and other materials all changed after ridged testing. BFX Flies use a new feather dye to produce incredible colors like nothing else we have seen. To produce a durable fly you must have the best materials.

What do you mean by a Durable and Dependable Fly:
There is nothing worse than a fly falling apart after a few casts. We have developed tying and gluing techniques that increase the life of the fly. Many of our flies were tested all over the world in some of the toughest fishing conditions. Changes were consistently made until we were happy with the results. Our BFX flies are the best we can produce at any cost.

Many companies say the use quality materials, why are yours better:
Correct, they do use that word Quality over and over. In my opinion this word has become a catch word that has little meaning, it means something different to everyone. Take for example the term quality Japanese chemically sharpened hooks, there are good and bad hooks, what brand are they using? Another is “we use Mustad, Daiichi, and Acme quality hooks”, my question is which one is on your fly, the quality Acme Hook? Daiichi is an expensive hook and the truth is that very few commercial tiers use them. The same is true for feathers and other materials used in the tying of a fly. All of our materials are first inspected at our Boise Idaho facility before they ever are used in any fly we tie.

How do you sell your flies at such competitive prices using such expensive materials:
First and foremost we own our own tying facility, we do not use brokers, distributors, or purchase from different sources. This gives us total control over the tying operation so we can train our tiers to our own tying techniques, and have floor supervisors who watch for problems before they become serious. Our workers get generous bonuses which make our tiers strive to produce a better product and stay with us. This gives us an incredible product that sells itself after one use. By selling direct to the fly rod angler we eliminate a few levels of distribution which can triple the price of a fly. Blue Fly Café was one of the pioneers in direct on line selling of fishing flies on the Internet. Many discount flies are simply tied using whatever materials they can get at the time, which decreases the price but what are you really getting? Blue Fly Cafe’s BFX Series of fishing flies are tied using only the best materials, you have my guarantee on it.
